Target Question: Can C2PA or a new file format prove media was made by a human?
Direct Answer: C2PA and ideas such as will.i.am’s “Proof of Life” file can preserve evidence about who created media and how it changed. They cannot alone prove creative value, survive every transformation or determine permitted use. Provenance needs a chain connecting creation, distribution, display and human judgment.
In an August 14, 2026 Bloomberg clip, will.i.am asked why music produced through weeks of human effort travels in the same MP3 container as music generated in seconds. He proposed a “Proof of Life,” or .pol, file associated with biometrics, location and time.
This is not an implemented standard. Its value is the question: should lived effort remain visible when the artifact no longer reveals how it was made? A new extension alone cannot restore that missing context.
C2PA offers mature infrastructure. Version 2.4 of Content Credentials defines signed, tamper-evident claims about origin, edits, ingredients and participating actors.
It validates whether assertions remain associated with an asset and free from tampering. The specification avoids calling provenance “good” or “bad.” It supplies evidence, not judgment.
A photograph can have valid provenance and still mislead. An AI-assisted song can be deeply personal. Missing credentials do not prove a file is false.
The “nutrition label” metaphor is incomplete. Food labels work because packaging, retailers and rules preserve them. Digital media is cropped, compressed, screenshotted and re-encoded. Metadata can separate from content.
C2PA addresses this with Durable Content Credentials. Fingerprints or invisible watermarks can help locate a manifest after embedded metadata is removed.
The real system therefore includes tools, repositories, platforms and interfaces.
A 2025 Washington Post test uploaded a video with Content Credentials to eight social platforms. All removed the credentials; only YouTube showed an AI-related label, inside the description.
The cryptography had not necessarily failed. The human experience had.

The .pol concept begins with human meaning. C2PA begins with interoperable provenance. Neither works if evidence disappears before a decision.
No. Biometrics might show presence. They do not prove authorship, consent, ownership or quality. A heartbeat cannot show whether a musician approved the final edit. Time spent is not value created.
Hybrid production makes binary labels weaker. A person might write lyrics, direct an AI arrangement, perform vocals and approve mastering. “Human-made” versus “AI-made” erases the workflow people care about.
The better question is: Which claims can be supported, and what do they mean here?
Interfaces should distinguish verified claims from declarations, reveal meaningful transformations and communicate uncertainty. According to C2PA UX Recommendations, they must never imply missing credentials prove deception.
Evidence hidden in a specialist tool will not shape everyday judgment. Provenance matters only when people understand what it says—and what it does not.
Provenance is a relationship across a lifecycle.
When one layer refuses to participate, evidence may remain valid while becoming socially inert.
Cryptographic provenance is more defensible than asking an AI detector to guess from pixels. We should evaluate the human journey, not merely whether a credential existed at export.
The Trust Stack begins with evidence. It cannot end there.
It verifies provenance and tamper evidence, not the depicted event.
Embedded credentials can separate; durable credentials aid recovery.
